The Carbon Cube

The Carbon Cube is a project about communicating the scale of climate change. Each Carbon Cube can be related to a specific quantity of CO2 emissions, allowing spectators to visualize what the emissions from a given action actually look like. Carbon Cubes enable people to see the size of the climate problem. We believe that people, when confronted by the massive size of their own emissions, will begin to realize the magnitude of the climate crisis and their role in it. Similarly, by comparing the volumes displayed by the Carbon Cubes to the emissions saved by simple, conventional actions, we hope to inspire people that making small changes in lifestyle can create large changes in CO2 emissions.

Each 6x6x6ft. Cube is the size of the volume of CO2 produced by: the average American every 4 hours, driving 28 miles, or landfilling 4.3 bags of garbage.

Each Carbon Cube is also a community mural project, and can be reused or repainted to advocate for different issues, or to just provide a blank canvas. We have these cubes to be incredibly powerful tools for creative expression, because it does not carry with it preconceived notions of an art space. Consequently, many people who have not painted in years pick up brushes, and find themselves enjoying the creative process, sometimes for hours. By proving this open space for visual dialogue it promotes community interaction and cooperation and can be seen as a metaphor for community action itself – a group of people coming together to make something better than it was.

Cubes are easily transportable, and make fantastic projects for community events, festivals, schools, or education campaigns. For plans on how to build your own cube, click here! To order a ready made cube, click here! Cubes can also be constructed out of wood or other materials, you can even paint a cardboard box and have your own mini-carbon cube. Just determine its volume and it can be used as an educational tool about CO2 emissions.

With The Cube project we aim to help people understand what the science behind climate change means  these numbers mean, and how they relate to their everyday life. We believe that once people can understand climate change on a human scale, they will be able to realize the magnitude of the problem.

Project Goals

We imagine the Carbon Cubes as the first step in a global campaign to redefine the way in which CO2 emissions are discussed. Current convention of referring to CO2 emissions by their weight (tons, pounds, etc.) furthers the disconnect that exists between human action and CO2 emissions. It is very difficult for an ordinary person to comprehend their emissions when they are being asked to imagine the weight of a gas. Conversations with Bill McKibben, James Hansen, and Steven Schneider have illustrated their understanding of this flaw of communication, and their willingness to adopt a new convention, and to participate in its advocacy.

Future possibilities for growth of this project could eventually include the development of a standard by which products can display their carbon footprint in a way that the general public can understand. This would allow for an entirely new way for individual consumers to manage their carbon footprint.

Project History

Since the Carbon Cube Project’s conception in July 2008 and subsequent implementation in March 2009 the Carbon Cube project has developed rapidly. In its first 6 months, Cube Workshops have been conducted at schools, conferences community gardens, permaculture sites, an ashram, and festivals across 7 states and 5 countries.
